KUALA LUMPUR (JULY 22, 2010): The third Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia will be played for the first time next month at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club – one of the country’s most highly rated golf clubs.
The US$60,000 tournament will tee-off from August 18 to 21 and is the eighth event on this year’s 10-leg Mercedes-Benz Tour.
Top Malaysians Danny Chia, Airil Rizman and 2008 champion Ben Leong will head the local challenge while Juvic Pagunsan from the Philippines and last year’s Merit champion Thailand’s Namchok Tantipkhakul will also compete.
In addition Singapore’s top two golfers Mardan Mamat and Lam Chih Bing, both winners on the Mercedes-Benz Tour, have entered.
The Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia will see a full field of 144 players play on the slick greens and pristine fairways of Kota Permai.
“We have witnessed six great events on the Mercedes-Benz Tour so far this season and so it is with eager anticipation we approach the Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia. The tournament has been a great success over the past two years and we have been able to see the best young players in ASEAN start to establish themselves in the professional game. We also have an added bonus this year as we are staging the event at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club – which as we all know is in outstanding condition, ” said Peter Honegg, President & CEO, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
This year marks the fourth year of the Mercedes-Benz Tour. It was launched by the Asean PGA in 2007 and in 2008 Mercedes-Benz came on board as the Tour title sponsor as part of three-year sponsorship agreement.
Kota Permai is well equipped to host the Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia having hosted the Malaysian Open in 2008, plus the Masters of Malaysia, the Masters of Asia, and World Cup qualifiers on several occasions.
“It is a privilege to host the Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia, which is an important event on the Malaysian golf calendar. We are aware the Mercedes-Benz Tour is playing an important role particularly for the young professionals in the region and we therefore look forward to hosting one of their events. Kota Permai is no stranger to hosting top international tournaments and we will be more than prepared for the tournament,” said
Tang Meng Loon, General Manager, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club.
Kota Permai was opened in 1998 and its layout was designed by Ross Watson. In Malay, the words Kota Permai mean serene and beauty and the club has not failed to live up to its name.
It is set within the 1820-acre township of Kota Kemuning, and the Hicom Gamuda developed property continues to impress all who walk its fairways. Undoubtedly, Kota Permai is the jewel in the township's crown and was designed to be very much a part of the local community.
The Mercedes-Benz Masters of Malaysia will play a key role in deciding who will compete in November’s Barclays Singapore Open.
The Mercedes-Benz Tour will offers its members a direct pathway into the US$5 million tournament this year after announcing it has secured seven spots in one of the world’s most lucrative national Opens.
The top six players from this year’s final Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit will qualify along with the number one ranked player from last year.
Namchok, who claimed the 2009 Merit list following two victories, is therefore the first player to benefit from this exciting new development.
Such incentive means the Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia will see a class field line up including all the winners so far this year such as Filipino Artemio Murakami, winner of the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Masters Philippines, and Thailand’s Udorn Duangdecha, Chawalit Plaphol and Thanyakon Khrongpha winners of the Singha Pattaya Open, ICTSI Mt. Malarayat Championship and Kariza Indonesia Championship respectively.
Filipinos Jay Bayron and Tony Lascuna will also bid for honors at Kota Permai. Bayron has been in outstanding from this year having finished runner-up in the first three events while Lascuna will be hoping to make amends for his play-off loss to Taiwan’s Lu Chien-soon in last year’s Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia.
