Golf Malaysia ‘Ace of Aces’ Championship 2016
The Battle of the Acers

Rawang, 1 December 2016: Success associated with the Golf Malaysia ‘Ace of Aces’ Championship was again the case in the 27th edition and it was cheers to the winners who took home valuable prizes to make it a profitable morning at Templer Park Country Club.

Chang Thean Siang, handicap 3, took the Men’s Division A title with 40 stableford points, marking a win at his very first Aces tournament. His one and only ace, thus far, came in 2013 at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club. He saw it as reward for his 10-year devotion to the game.

Owner of a furniture business in Puchong, he was too busy to play last year. “Busy or not busy I hope to play next year,” he said, being competitive enough to want to try and defend his title.

There was a two-way tie for second between Allan Yap (2) and Bryan Un (8) when both finished with 39 points, and Allan finished second on countback. Brandon Bong (12) and Erick Foo (3) both finished with 37 points and Brandon claimed fourth on countback.

The Men’s B Division was a tough affair with all Top-5 contenders accumulating 36 points. In the countback battle it was Mohd Kamal Arifin Ibrahim (14) who emerged champion, Danavandhan Batumali (13) was second, Kasim Zainudin (15) was third, Fauzi Suib (14) fourth and fifth went to Mohd Faisal Sarehan (15).

The Men’s C Division was a mixed bag where Lim Lean Kuan (21) secured the top spot with 36 points. Five points off the pace was P. Thurairajah (24) with 31 points. Third went to Ihsan Mohammad (20) with 30 points. Fourth to Tan Boo Him (23) with 29 points and the fifth and final prize went to Ng Boon Kuan (20) with 28 points.

Mychelle Tai, handicap 8, took the Women’s title with 40 points, for the first time although she’s been a regular at the annual tournament. A two-time acer, her first was in April 2015 in Bukit Jalil and just six months later, a second at the at The Els Club Teluk Datai in Langkawi.

A golf addict since 2003, she plays both at Tropicana Golf & Country Club and Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia. She took to the game at 30 and looking back she said she wished she’d taken up the game when she was much younger. “Maybe I could have become a pro,” she said. Standing at 5ft 8in. She swings pretty solid and her score that day backed it up.

Runner-up position went to Kim Joo Yeon (17) with 32 points, Helel Chong (20) took third with 30 points, while Winnie Yap Hua Sing (23) beat Low Mun Kan (11) into fourth place on countback when both finished with 29 points.

Kevin Chan (13), Transview Marketing Manager, won the Invitational category with 38 points. Manibalan Kutty (18), Director and General Manager of Templer Park Country Club, finished in a tie with Daryl Loo (14) of Pan-West on 36 points and Manibalan claimed second place on countback. Fourth went to Jagdish Pantlia (15) with 36 points and Chia Hua Eng (24) claimed fifth.

There was a host of novelty contests and a number of Hole-in-one prizes on offer which included a Mazda 3 2.0 and the Limited Edition Titoni-Golf Malaysia Hole-in-one Watch worth over RM5,500 on all the par-3 holes.

While all the participants had an eye on these big prizes and gave it their all, especially for the Mazda car, none hit the jackpot but it wasn’t for want of trying.

In the novelty contest there were a host of delighted winners with the first being Lam Kong Foo who won the Longest Drive on Hole 14 with his 285 yard drive.

In the Nearest-to-Pin on Hole 8, Mohd Nasir Othman claimed the prize with a 1 foot 7 inch effort, while Roland Cheng Sun Kian picked up the Nearest-to-Bunker prize on Hole 7 (4 feet 6 inches).

All the while spirits were kept afloat with a generous supply of Carlsberg Beer served on draft at the half-way hut. For those in need of a drink to keep them cool and refreshed an endless supply of Cowa Coconut Water was chilling in coolers and served with some lively banter at the half-way hut as well.
On the buggies, within easy reach and just the thing to get the participants on-the-road was a supply of Umbro Isotonic Drink and Fiona Mineral Water.

The prize giving was a lively affair as the main winners collected their prizes and sponsors got a chance to witness the delight in their faces. Gratitude goes out to MST Golf, Srixon, Prestige, Bridgestone Golf, TaylorMade, Transview, Cobra, Wilson Golf and Grindworks.

The Goodie Bag items were supplied by Crestlink who provided the official attire, Sun Play, Asepo, Evian, Brabus and Titoni.

Rounding off the tournament was a Lucky Draw that kept everyone riveted to their seats as it was well worth the wait. Two Grand Lucky Draw prizes captured attention starting with a 3 Day/2 Night stay with two rounds of golf in Jakarta, Indonesia, provided by Liberty Golf Services. This prize went to a very surprised and happy Siva Kumaran. That left the top prize of a Titoni-Golf Malaysia Hole-in-one watch worth RM5,548 … it came in two colours, red or blue, with the option of a soft or metallic bracelet … all for the winner to choose. As this was an Aces tournament it was only fitting an Ace Achiever would pull the winning name, and it was an ecstatic Tan Yen Joo who was chosen from among the scorecards in the draw as the lucky recipient.

Tham Onn Chuan, CEO of ATG Watch, the supplier of the Swiss timepiece, was heard to say he had “never seen such a happy winner” in all the time he’d been supporting the game through sponsorship.
It was Tan’s first time to take part in Aces and he had travelled from Kedah to participate.

Looks like many a newcomer was well rewarded for their first time appearance and we at Golf Malaysia magazine can look forward to hosting them yet again at the next edition in 2017.
