Hi guys,

Lately doing some browsing on GPS golf watch , interested to buy one but really cant decide which model to go for , quite many in the market , hope some one can help me , so far I have taken note on Garmin S20 Approach and also lookin at others.

Also would like to know about this if some of u are familiar with this watches :

1) yes it track by gps , meaning for P5, 2nd shot , the watch will show balance distance or distance for layup or etc..
2) the final score have to press button to enter or auto recorder, how does the watch knows we put how many times ?
3) does the watch show an overall view of the hole coming ( ofcourse player can refer to score card ), meaning dog leg or hazard ?

I apologise if the question sound silly, hope u guys can help.

Hi Cavin!

i have had a few gps watches (voice caddie T1, Bushnell Neo XS) and am now using the Garmin X40 (https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/into-sports/golfing/approach-x40/prod519298.html) - not sure if it's available here yet. Just my two cents to your questions.

1) yes it track by gps , meaning for P5, 2nd shot , the watch will show balance distance or distance for layup or etc..

3) does the watch show an overall view of the hole coming ( ofcourse player can refer to score card ), meaning dog leg or hazard?

- Most gps watches will give you the distance to the front, centre and back of green from where you are and some watches will have extra features. For instance, the Bushnell Neo XS and Garmin x40 have a feature showing you distances to hazards i.e. bunkers and water hazards. It won't show you specifically the dogleg, but will show you distance to the end of the fairway.

2) the final score have to press button to enter or auto recorder, how does the watch knows we put how many times?

- With the T1 and Neo Xs both do not have a score keeping feature. The x40 on the other hand does, and after each hole it will ask for your score, number of putts and whether you found the fairway and you can sync with watch to your phone via blue tooth and view your stats, score card and even view your shot history on the garmin connect app. You can also edit any mistakes in score later.

There are of course limitations to the watch. Top of my head, if you lose your tee shot and re-tee, it won't register on the watch as an errant tee shot, so it won't be as accurate when you view your shot history. But you can still keep the right score so that's fine.

Of the three, I feel the x40 is the best. While it may be expensive, the shape, stat keeping functions, blue tooth connectivity and garmin's app make it very worth while in my books, for now. Laughing

I guess at the end of the day, it depends on two things. What do you want from the watch and your budget. Hope the above helps~ Cool

Of course, the best thing to have is a range finder (Bushnell, Nikon, etc) where you can get distances to numerous positions within the hole/course.

Bushnell has the slope removable option which can be made tournament compliance. With the slope edition (non-tournament compliant), you can get the exact yardage for each of your shots which is an advantage to out shoot your fellow golf kakis!

Been using garmin s6 for quite some time...

Few times had opportunity to compare with Bushnell its within 2-3 meters gap which for me good enough as you can't laser in to any lower target.

My personal opinion - forget about the scorecard feature as its too cumbersome. No offering is perfect at the moment.

I would recommend anything garmin - reputable and they have service center here in maluri.

Older model like s4 good enough and can be cheap. The main feature is the same. Maybe monochrome screen no practice mode (which seems just novelties at best).

Tks Azri for the info too.

Garmin S6 is my choice too , but price is bit too much , I saw Zalora selling at RM1660 , is a good piece with color and touch screen mode.

Anyway high chances I will go for Garmin Approach S20 at this moment .

I used to have a 2nd hand Garmin S2 and bought a S20 recently.
Very satisfied with Garmin quality.
Just take note that some hole's dog leg may not show.
Eg. Danau Hole #10 dogleg left don't show on both the S2 and S20.
But I've played other courses and they do show the dogleg.
Note that S20 has the hazard of each hole pre-loaded while S4-S6 you have to set it yourself at site.

Cheers!

Minor annoyance that small drain (hazard) across towards end #18 Seri Selangor is not in the map.. So me not big hitter have to guesstimate.. I guess they try to encourage you to 2 on! Instead of lay up hahaha..

Nevertheless I think garmin still the best.

BTW submitted few maps to them and gets updated regularly.

Hi Azri, thanks for your info, appreciate if you can share on how to submit the latest maps and where to send the info to Garmin. There are 3 holes at Bkt Jalil not updated since renovation.

finally I got mine GPS approach S20 from MST , tested one round with it in the weekend , quite satisfied , will need more rounds to get to know more.

**like the accuracy of pre shot distance , helps a lot to select the right clubs to use.
