Jean needs some financial help in pursuit of LPGA dream

Jean Chua

Petaling Jaya, 25 January 2015: Malaysian golfer Jean Chua has not given up on her dream of playing on the LPGA Tour.

The 28-year-old will continue to pursue her LPGA Tour card through the second-tier Symetra Tour in the United States.

Jean will be competing in her fifth season on the Tour, which begins with the IOA Championship in California from Feb 18-21. The top-10 money earners at the end of the season will gain playing privileges in next years LPGA Tour, the No. 1 circuit in the world.

She finished a career-worst 140th on the money list last season, making just four cuts in 14 starts.

As a result, the 2009 Thai LPGA Open winner lost her full playing rights.

Luckily, she regained it by reaching the final stage of the LPGA Tour Qualifying School last month.

My goal has never changed. Ill keep on trying because I know I can do it, said Jean, who competed in the 2011 US Womens Open.

Jean, however, will have no financial backing this time. For the last three seasons, she was supported financially by Sime Darby Foundation.

Its going to be tough without financial support. Now, Im on my own. I need to come up with about US$50,000 (RM214,000) a year. The entry fee for each event is US$500 (RM2,140) and there are 22 events. So thats US$11,000 (RM47,000).

I also need to pay for coaching, caddie and travel-related expenses, said Jean.

To solve her financial woes, Jean has resorted to run her own fundraising efforts through the GoFundMe website, which is a popular crowdfunding platform in the US.

I need all the help I can get, she said.

Jeans best-ever finish on the Symetra Tour money list was 15th in 2012. She played in 16 events, posting five top-10 finishes including a joint second place at the Riviera Nayarit Classic.
