hi all,

I am brand new to golf, used a 2nd hand set to get a first lesson with a pro (PGA & certified instructor). Learned the 2nd hand set is not right, shaft too much flex and grip too small, iron too light for my purpose. So he recommended rightfully to get something suitable to learn with. So I better get that soon, before getting further lessons.

1. Recommended is to get custom fitting Ping, but sets me back 3,500 for 6 irons (?)
2. Get a full set (eg Callway) from '3 years ago' tech, still 2,000 to 2,500
3. Seek a 'suitable' used set of recommended brand for apprximately 1,000 - 1,500, then possibly get the custom fit once I know I like the sport and are willing to spend for (1.)

I tend to go for 3. because 1. is just quite expensive. Custom fit sounds overkill, not only because I never will be a pro, but also because there is nothing to adapt; I am new and pretty much standard size. As for 2. I think I can get as well 3. because I don't need the shiny new look for now to learn.

What is your experience or recommendation ?

Thanks,

Hi Xircom, welcome to the Forum.

You'd said it yourself, go for option 3.

There are a lot of used sets around and Mygolf forum is a good start for you to source for one. Would suggest you go for a Game Improvement set first with standard fitted shafts (regular flex) and not the blades, or players clubs. For RM1,000 and below, you should be able to get a reasonable used set/model that probably aged around 3 - 4 years back.

Then, as you improve and get better, you can opt for something better or go for club-fitted players' sets.

Good luck!

I'd say, don't even get a full set 1st.

Maybe get a used #7 iron to play around with. Once you think you're ready to dedicate yourself to the game, still not too late to progress with a full set

If you have any friends or relatives who is willing to lend you a set to practice, even better.

Happy golfing Wink

Ya, agree with you both, RGT is the only one I know for 2nd hand, hope they are all genuine !?
Although the teacher started with the swing using a PW and said let's work down the numbers as we go.
I assume 5-PW is a good start for 2nd hand, if they have hybrid, woods 3 or 5 even better.
Putter and driver are fine from the existing set.
Thanks so much to all you experienced.

Xircom, there are other places to look at for used clubs, for example the forum's Buy & Sell Thread here:-

What are you currently using now?? If the irons themselves are Games Improving irons, it's easy to change to suitable shaft, grips, SW, etc and will still be cheaper than to get another set??

Getting another 2nd set you might again fall into the category "ooooh this set is not suitable for me"

Just my 2cent......Ed

hi all,

my suggestion is this:

go to 3balls.com ebay site and get one of the ping i3s/callaway x14/16 or TMs from 5 or more years ago. with shipping you can get them for less than RM600/-. The thin is, you must be comfortable with the how the club looks: thin or fat bottom, club when at address etc.

Now get it fitted: go to a clubbfitter and change the shafts, grips and get the right weight and swingweight for you. All in cost should be around RM1200/-

RGT prices are way overpriced for 2nd clubs. Even mudah has better offers.

@Xircom:

Everyone on this thread shared a valid point.

Let me ask you this; how much you are willing to spend? how dedicated to the game you think you'll be?

A good option for many beginners, however, is looking for an inexpensive and playable first set. That way, if you don't follow through with the game, you haven't wasted much money.

The same suggestion.
I started learning golf 3 months ago. I bought 02 pieces of 7 iron, 3, 5 and 9 iron from Tokyogolf near Tesco Ampang. Then I bought a driver and tried some unitl I found the most suitable for me.

Note: any item priced more than RM300 can be returned.

HI, first post here. How's everyone doing? I am Ken from JB and very keen to learn golf. I found a few used golf sets being advertised for sale in Singapore. Links here :

http://www.adpost.com/sg/sports_games/7428/

http://www.adpost.com/sg/sports_games/7427/

http://www.adpost.com/sg/sports_games/7426/

As i am a newbie, would appreciate the seniors here to advise which used golf sets above should i purchase, that will be most suitable for me as a beginner ?

I do not know the seller so is there any chance that he might be selling a fake set ?

Thank you.
