Petaling Jaya, June 7, 2010: The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters will be staged on the Asian Tour Schedule for the third successive year in August, reinforcing its objectives to unearth champions and creating new stars.
Title sponsored by Worldwide Holdings, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, the full-field Asian Tour tournament will return to the challenging Seri Selangor Golf Club, Malaysia’s first public golf course, from August 4 to 7 (Wednesday to Saturday).
A plethora of Asian Tour stars are expected to converge at the RM1.2 million (US$300,000) tournament where local stars Danny Chia, Iain Steel, Shaaban Hussin and Ben Leong, who was victorious in the 2008 edition, will spearhead the Malaysian charge.
Four local juniors will earn a chance to rub shoulders with the stars from the Asian Tour as the top four finishers at the Etiqa Selangor International Junior Masters will qualify for the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
To further cultivate interest among the juniors, golf clinics will also be held during the tournament for promising Selangor amateurs.
Selangor Government State Secretary Datuk Ramli Mahmud expressed the state government’s support for the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters. “The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters has been a huge success for the last two years and it has received tremendous exposure both locally and internationally through the extensive Asian Tour media and television platform,” said Ramli.
“The tournament has grown immensely since joining the Asian Tour in 2008 and we believe it will continue to grow and further promote the sport and tourism sector in our state and country,” he added.
Worldwide Holdings Chairman Datuk Mohd Arif Ab. Rahman said the tournament would be a significant affair as Worldwide Holdings celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Worldwide Holdings, one of the leading property developers in Malaysia, has various properties under its banner and will soon unveil its state-of-the-art Menara Worldwide in December which is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and recognized by the Green Building Index (GBI).
“This is our company’s 20th anniversary and we are delighted to commemorate this grand occasion with the third year of our title sponsorship of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
“It is a tremendous honour for us to be associated with the tournament which has been successfully organised at Seri Selangor. We are pleased to see the tournament grow from a local event into an international Asian Tour tournament and we hope more local players will benefit from this event,” said Mohd Arif.
Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han believes the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters will continue to unearth new talents and champions as it did in the previous two years.
“We have seen many young winners in previous years like Malaysia’s very own Ben Leong and Rick Kulacz of Australia. The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters is an ideal platform for the rising stars to showcase and harness their talent and skills,” said Han.
“I expect our leading players to feature prominently in this tournament as Malaysia is one of the favorite destinations on the Asian Tour. There are a lot of potential golfers in Malaysia and it is through tournaments such as this that will create greater interest among the younger generation to pursue their ambitions as a professional golfer,” Han added.
