Smith Leads On Day One At CIMB Classic

Cameron Smith (USA)

Kuala Lumpur, 12 October 2017: In his first start of the 2017-18 PGA TOUR Season, Australian Cameron Smith opened with an 8-under 64 at TPC Kuala Lumpur, good enough for a one-shot lead over Poom Saksansin and Xander Schauffele. The opening-round 64 is two better than his previous best round in eight previous rounds at TPC Kuala Lumpur, a 66 in the first round of the 2015 CIMB Classic.

This is the first time that Smith has led or co-led following the first round of any tournament in his PGA TOUR career. In his previous 63 starts, his best position after 18 holes was T2 at the 2016 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he eventually finished T11. He has shot 64 two other times on TOUR, most recently in the first round of the 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii; his career-low round is a 63 in the final round of last seasonís Wyndham Championship.

The first-round leader/co-leader has gone on to win two of seven previous editions of the CIMB Classic, the feat accomplished most recently by Justin Thomas, who shared the first-round lead last year with Derek Fathauer and Keegan Bradley after an opening 64.

Poom Saksansin (THA)

Poom Saksansin is making his first start on the PGA TOUR. He birdied the opening hole (10) before making eight straight pars. He carded four straight birdies after the turn and closed with two birdies.

The cherubic Thai created a huge impression in his debut appearance when he fired seven birdies including four on the trot after the turn at the TPC Kuala Lumpur.

Poom, together with Americans Keegan Bradley and Xander Schauffele, trail Australian Cameron Smith by a single shot heading into the second round of the CIMB Classic.

Xander Schauffele (USA)

Making his first start of the season, and first start since becoming the first rookie to win the TOUR Championship, Xander Schauffele opened with a bogey-free 65 at the CIMB Classic, one shot off Cameron Smithís lead. Schauffeleís best position through 18 holes previously was T2 after the first round of last seasonís U.S. Open at Erin Hills, where he eventually finished T5.

Keegan Bradley (USA)

Making his fourth start in the CIMB Classic, American Keegan Bradley opened with a 65 and is one shot off of the pace set by Cameron Smith. Bradley has a history of getting off to hot starts at this event, never having shot worse than 66 in the first round. Last year, Bradley opened with a 64 and was tied for the lead on his way to a sixth-place finish. He also recorded a top 10 at the CIMB Classic in 2013, when he also opened with 65.

Brendan Steele, coming off of his second-straight win at the Safeway Open, shot an opening-round 67 and is three off the lead. Steele finished T26 in the CIMB Classic last year coming in off a victory.

Justin Thomas, the 2016-17 PGA TOUR Player of the Year and FedExCup champion opened with a 2-under 70, his second-worst round in his CIMB Classic career. The two-time defending champion owns the lowest stroke average at this event (minimum of eight rounds), averaging 65.88 per round coming into 2017. He is attempting to become the first player since Steve Stricker at the John Deere Classic (2009-11) to win the same event three years in a row.

Kevin Na opened with a 6-under 66 that included an eagle on the par-4 16th hole from 116 yards with a 54-degree wedge.

Indian player Anirban Lahiri, who held a four-shot lead through 54-holes at this event last year, opened with a 5-under 67.

Davis Love III, 53, recently inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, opened with a 5-under 67 in his first start of the season.

Perez Powers Ahead At CIMB Classic

Pat Perez (USA)

Kuala Lumpur, 13 October 2017: Pat Perez took advantage of the cooler conditions by firing a superb seven-under-par 65 to seize the second round lead at the US$7 million CIMB Classic on Friday.

The American turned in 35 but benefited from a three-hour 40-minute thunderstorm by shooting six birdies on his homeward nine to lead on 13-under-par 131 at the TPC Kuala Lumpur.

Xander Schauffele, who was voted the 2016-2017 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, eagled the par-three fifth hole from 27-feet to stay a further shot back following a 67 in the event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and PGA Tour.

Xander Schauffele (USA)

Sung Kang (68) of Korea, a winner on the Asian Tour, overnight leader Cameron Smith (71) of Australia and Thomas Pieters (67) of Belgium shared third place on matching 135s to lie four shots back of the lead.

The 41-year-old Perez bogeyed his third hole but recovered with birdies on 13 and 14. He made a charge on his back nine with four straight birdies from the second hole and closed with two birdies to move to the top of the leaderboard.

After winning the TOUR Championship three weeks ago, Schauffele is in contention for another victory in his maiden appearance at the CIMB Classic.

Perez Continues To Lead Into Final Day of CIMB Classic

Pat Perez (USA)

Kuala Lumpur, 14 October 2017: American Pat Perez fired a third round eight-under-par 64 under sweltering heat to extend his overnight advantage to four shots at the CIMB Classic on Saturday.

The Americanís best finish at the Malaysian showpiece was a ninth-place finish at the 2012 edition. But having produced a masterclass in putting at the TPC Kuala Lumpur all-week, Perez remains well on course to become the oldest winner in the CIMB Classic at 41 years old.

Perez raced out with an outward 33 and continued his birdie blitz on holes 10 and 12 after the turn. A bogey on 13 did little to dent his title aspirations as the American would storm home with four birdies in his closing five holes.

Perezís three-day total of 21-under-par 195 means he will head into the final round of the US$7 million event in pole position with compatriot Xander Schauffele in second place after carding a 67.

Sung Kang (KOR)

Koreaís Sung Kang, a one-time Asian Tour winner, returned with a 65 to take third place while Japanís Hideki Matsuyama, who has two top-five results in the event, and Keegan Bradley of the United States are tied for fourth on 201.

Indiaís Anirban Lahiri staged his comeback with a 64 to move into sixth place having started his round in tied-23rd place while Thailandís Jazz Janewattananond continued his fairy tale run with a 66 to end the day tied for seventh with Ollie Schniederjans of the United States.

Whee Kim (KOR)

Whee Kim made an ace at the 208-yard par-3 15th hole, the first of his PGA TOUR career and the second of the 2017-18 PGA TOUR season. The hole-in-one earned Kim a BMW 740Le xDrive Hybrid, which was presented to him by Han Sang Yun, Managing Director/CEO of BMW Malaysia after the round. This is the fourth consecutive year that an ace has been recorded at the CIMB Classic.

Day 3 Leaderboard

195 Pat PEREZ (USA) 66-65-64.
199 Xander SCHAUFFELE (USA) 65-67-67.
200 Sung KANG (KOR) 67-68-65.
201 Hideki MATSUYAMA (JPN) 70-68-63, Keegan BRADLEY (USA) 65-71-65.
204 Anirban LAHIRI (IND) 67-73-64.
205 Ollie SCHNIEDERJANS (USA) 72-68-65, Jazz JANEWATTANANOND (THA) 70-69-66.
