The 31-year-old Leong pulled ahead of the chasing pack in the qualifying event for the prestigious CIMB Classic, thanks to a brilliant round where he hit 18 greens in regulation and sank eight birdies.

Veteran Danny Chia, who is bidding for a sixth appearance at the CIMB Classic which will be played at TPC KL from October 12 to 15, carded a 68 to share second place with surprise package, Mohd Zur’ie Harun.

Battling Chia Retains One-Shot Lead Into Final Day Of CIMB National Championship

Danny Chia

Kuala Lumpur, 27 July 2017: Danny Chia maintained his overnight one-shot lead at the CIMB National Championship after scrambling to a one-over-par 73 in the third round on Thursday.

The 44-year-old Chia fought back from a mid-round wobble at TPC Kuala Lumpur where he dropped four shots on the 12th and 13th holes to stay in position to win the RM200,000 tournament which rewards the winner with a ticket to the prestigious CIMB Classic from October 12 to 15.

Rookie Amir Nazrin Jailani and Ben Leong shot a 72 and 71 respectively to share second place while defending champion Gavin Green stayed within striking distance following a 72 to share fourth place with Wilson Choo, who came home in 74.

Chasing a sixth appearance at the US$7 million CIMB Classic, which is the only PGA TOUR event staged in Southeast Asia, veteran Chia, who is a two-time Asian Tour champion, needed a crucial birdie on 17 to keep his nose ahead of the chasing pack with his three-day total of five-under-par 211.

Last year’s runner-up, Leong rued a cold putter as he snared three birdies against two bogeys to stay in the chase for the winner’s cheque of RM30,000 and a second appearance at the CIMB Classic while the 20-year-old Amir shot three birdies against as many bogeys to tie Leong on 212.

A 20-foot birdie conversion at the par five 18th hole pushed Green, 23, into a share of fourth place on 214, three behind Chia and with everything to play for on Friday.

Day 3 Leaderboard

211 Danny Chia 68-70-73
212 Ben Leong 65-76-71, Amir Nazrin Jailani 69-71-72
214 Gavin Green 72-70-72, Wilson Choo 69-71-74

Danny Chia Qualifies For CIMB Classic After Play-Off Victory In CIMB National Championship

From left: Todd Rhinehart, Vice President & Executive Director, PGA TOUR; Effendy Shahul Hamid, Chief Executive Officer, Group Asset Management & Investments, CIMB; Danny Chia, winner of CIMB National Championship 2017 and Valrick Harris Zainal Abidin, President, PGA of Malaysia at the prize presentation ceremony at TPC Kuala Lumpur. Danny Chia will play at the CIMB Classic 2017, alongside world’s professional golfers on 12 – 15 October 2017.

Kuala Lumpur, 28 July 2017: Veteran Danny Chia secured his sixth appearance at the prestigious CIMB Classic after defeating rising star Gavin Green with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden-death play-off at the CIMB National Championship on Friday.

Overnight leader Chia battled to a final round of three-under-par 69 at TPC Kuala Lumpur after overcoming an early triple bogey with eight birdies for a tournament aggregate of eight-under-par 280.

Trailing by three at the start of the day, Green forced extra time with a glorious 66 highlighted by seven birdies. After both players shot pars in the first extra hole at the par five 18th hole, Chia then claimed his third success at the qualifying tournament for the CIMB Classic with a birdie from six feet.

With the CIMB National Championship, previously known as the SapuraKencana National Classic, offering a coveted spot in October’s US$7 million CIMB Classic only to the winner, the 23-year-old Green will take heart that he will likely earn a spot in the PGA TOUR tournament through the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit.

Currently fourth on the money rankings, Green needs to remain in the top-10 as of October 9 to qualify for the CIMB Classic for the second successive year. The highest ranked Malaysian on the Official World Golf Ranking as of October 2 will also earn a spot in the CIMB Classic.

Rookie professional Amir Nazrin Jailani finished a creditable third after signing off with a 69, which included a missed birdie attempt at the 18th hole which would have put him into the play-off while Ben Leong, who held a one-shot lead at the turn, settled for fourth position following a 70 to finish two back of the play-off duo.

Final Day Leaderboard

280 Gavin Green 72-70-72-66, Danny Chia 68-70-73-69
(Chia won with a birdie on the second play-off hole)
