MPI Generali Saujana Amateur Championship 2017
Dragon To The Fore

Atiruj Winaicharonechai (THA)

Shah Alam, 23 May 2017: Atiruj ‘Dragon’ Winaicharonechai led the Thai charge in the opening game of the 14-nation MPI Generali Saujana Amateur Championship held at Saujana Golf & Country Club’s famed Palm Course with a 5-under 67 from an eagle and 6 birdies. A stroke back is Taiwan’s Yi Tong Chen at 68, followed by defending champion Witchayanon ‘Zoom’ Chothirunrungrueng of Thailand and Joshua Ho of Singapore, both at 3-under 69.

The 16-year-old Atiruj, known by his Thai name ‘Dragon’, professed that luck was on his side: “I would say that my game was normal all day except that I pulled my drive at the Par 4, 6th hole where it hit the road and took a lucky bounce over the deep rough. I was lucky to escape with a bogey. Then I attacked the 17th 373 yard Par 4 hole – my ball hit the green and ran over. I topped my chip back to the green and the ball ran into the cup for eagle! Again at the 18th Par 5 hole, I used a 3-wood for my second shot and the ball again landed on the green and overshot. I didn’t have a good chip but still the ball landed about 5 feet from the hole where I made birdie.”

Artiruj was out in 35 and in at 32 ¬– thanks to his eagle-birdie finish whilst Chen had 33 going out and 35 coming in.

“I made 15 greens in regulation which gave me many opportunities for birdie but I only made 5. I had some problems with the greens but my drives were good, as were my iron approaches,” said Whitchayanon or ‘Zoom’ to his Thai friends.

Joshua was 3-under in the opening nine and played par in the closing nine.

Freshly crowned 2017 Malaysian Amateur Champion Sadom ‘Phet’ Kaewkanjana posted 2-under 70 together with Aussie Lachlan Barker and Gregory Foo of Singapore.

“I putted well today, making 6 birdies after hitting the greens in regulation 11 times. I had trouble stopping the ball last week at the National Amateur in Sabah but here the greens were receptive. I also drove well and my irons were good,” said Sadom.

Ervin Chang and Danial Durisic were the two best Malaysians with 71, joint 8th with Hein Sithu of Myanmar

Malaysia’s Mohamed Afif Mohd Razif retired through a bad back after 12 holes: “I stepped into a deep grassy hole at the National Championship in Sabah last week. I felt the jolt then but managed to finish. I thought I could continue playing this week but found it too painful . . .”

Yi Tong Chen Leads With 2 Sub-Par Rounds At The Cobra

Yi Tong Chen (TPE)

Shah Alam, 24 May 2017: Yi Tong Chen of Taiwan soared to the top in the 30th MPI Generali Saujana Amateur Championship held at Saujana Golf & Country Club with another sub-par round of 5-under 67 to add to his opening 4-under 68. His 135 total is 4 strokes ahead of Day 1 leader Atiruj Winaicharonechai of Thailand who only managed a par round on the second day.

The long driving 17-year-old Chen had another day of ‘good driving and good putting’ which secured him 5 birdies and an eagle at the Cobra (Palm Course) of Saujana. His birdie at the Par 3, 5th was almost a hole-in-one with the ball just hanging at the lip of the cup.

“My eagle came at the Par 5, 13th hole after a good drive with only 170 yards to the pin,” said Chen. “I used an 8-iron for the approach which landed to about 30 feet from the pin and I made the putt. But my most exciting hole was at the 5th where ball stopped less than 1 centimetre from the hole!”

According to his team captain David Shen, Chen is a very aggressive player and averages more than 295 yards off the tee.

“I listened to my captain for this tournament and he said: ‘Go for it! Use the driver . . . and I did. I hit the green with my drive at the Par 4 (344 yd), 4th hole but I messed it up with a three-putt for par,” said Chen. “This course is short but very difficult and tricky.”

Yi Tong Chen (TPE) teeing off watched by Jayden Pang (left) and Wai Yan Linn (centre) of Myanmar.

Chen also took the tiger line at the dogleg Par 4 (373 yd), 17th and missed the green by a few feet but he made birdie.

Only four other golfers managed to break par at 71 : 2013 champion Nicklaus Chiam of Singapore, Lachlan Barker of Australia, Jonathan Wijono of Indonesia and Thailand’s Kosuke Hamamoto. Kosuke was born in Thailand and is of Japanese-Thai parentage.

At 141 and in 3rd position is Lachlan Barker with defending champion Witchayanon Chothirunrungrueng of Thailand a stroke adrift at 142.

Ervin Chang keeps Malaysia’s hope alive at joint 8th position (146) with Sadom Kaewkanjana of Thailand and Joshua Ho of Singapore.

Thai ‘Dragon’ Triumphs At Saujana
Playoff win for Thailand's Atiruj

Thailand’s Atiruj Winaicharonechai

Shah Alam, 25 May 2017: Thailand’s Atiruj Winaicharonechai won the MPI Generali Saujana Amateur Championship, edging Taiwan’s Chen Yi Tong in a playoff.

Atiruj, nicknamed ‘Dragon’ as he was born in the Year of the Dragon, carded a closing even-par 72 to overnight leader Chen’s 76 to force the playoff as both players tied on five-under-par after 54 holes at Saujana Golf & Country Club’s Palm Course.

On the first extra hole at the par-five 18th, the 16-year-old Atiruj sent his drive into a bunker and hit a poor second shot. Chen found a greenside bunker in two and Atiruj hit a three-iron third shot way right of the green. From there, the Thai conjured a sublime flop shot that stopped five feet from the flag.

Chen skulled his bunker shot over the green and duffed his chip well short, missing the par-save from 10 feet. Atiruj nailed the par putt – from almost the same spot where he missed a similar putt on the last hole of regulation – to claim the title .

“I am really happy to win this event, which is my first senior title outside Thailand,” said Atiruj, who hopes to get into the Thai squad for this year’s SEA Games in Malaysia.

Ervin Chang finished as the top Malaysian in eighth position on 219.

More than 100 players from 15 countries took part in the 30th edition of the World Amateur Golf Ranking event.
