MATRIX-Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions
Hail the 2017 Champions!

Shah Alam, 2 May 2017: It’s a marque amateur golf event born 31 years ago and still going strong – it’s the MATRIX-Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions tournament that scored a couple of firsts this time around, both adding to its long-term lustre.

It was sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association for the first time and MATRIX, a high-end property developer also made its debut as title sponsor.

This year’s event was held at the picturesque Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Golf & Country Club (SAASGCC) in Shah Alam, venue for two days of intense competition between Club Champions from throughout Malaysia and Singapore, that saw winners in two categories retain the titles they won last year.

It was Lim Kian Chong, 68, representing Glenmarie Golf and Country Club, who took the accolade in the Seniors category (Gross) and fast rising youngster Audrey Tan Wei Yen of Kelab Rekreasi Angkatan Tentera who came through among in the Women’s category (Gross), for back-to-back wins. They are now, also, the proud owners of two Green Jackets, provided by Spark Manshop, something only winners of The Masters get to experience.

But first to the main Men’s category (Gross), which was won by Leroy Chiam, representing TPC Kuala Lumpur, who qualified for the competition by winning his club championship last year.

From left: Sam Loh (Matrix Holdings), Leroy Chiam and Andrew Ng (Golf Malaysia).

This time, playing to a two-handicap, he shot 74 on Day 1, on the back of five bogeys and three birdies. He was able to gather himself for a one-under 71 on Day 2 for a 145 total, which was good enough as his nearest rival was Lee Ka Tung representing Sibu Golf Club, who shot 150 (77-73).

The Best Nett winner over two days was Suhaimi Idris representing Harvard Golf & Country Club (143).

In the Ladies category, it was teenager and 5 handicapper Audrey Tan, 16, who recorded 76 on Day 1, while Day 2 saw her post an 80 for a 156 total. She’s aiming to win again this year so she can defend her title and make it three-in-a-row next year. Noraishah Alisa (4 handicap) finished runner-up after rounds of 78-80 (158).

In bagging the Seniors title, Lim Kian Chong, 60, with a five handicap, finished Day 1 with an eight-over 80. Day 2 was on the button for him as he rolled in four birdies. Two bogeys were his only blemishes for a two-under round of 70.

“I knew I had to shoot below 75 if I was to beat (Wong) Hung Nung,” who came in second with rounds of 82 and 73.

He realises he will need to win his club championship again this year if he is to play and score a hat-trick in the Champion of Champions event next year.

Winners of MATRIX-Golf Malaysia Champion of Champions.

In the Longest Drive Novelty contests for the Men’s, Women’s and Senior categories, the winners for Day 1 were George Wee Yoke Boon (222m), Norshahira Alisa (175m) and Wong Heng Chee (207m). For Day 2 it was Lee Kah Ming (209), Noraishah Alisa (168) and Bernett Ling Soon Kiong (200m).

To reward any Hole-in-one achievements there were TITONI-Golf Malaysia HIO watches up for grabs on all the Par-3 holes, while on Day 2 a Mazda 2 was lying in wait at Hole 3. Many eyed and tried extra hard for the Mazda but it was not to be this time round.

Golf Malaysia’s General Manager, Andrew Ng, in welcoming the players, drew attention to sanctioning by the Malaysian Golf Association for the first time “to give the event more prestige.”

“This year, too, for the first time in quite a while we have a title sponsor, MATRIX, a high-end property developer with a signature project in Seremban, a 40-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Srixon, the Official Equipment sponsor, had pride of place in the tournament as they provided their extensive range of premier Japanese golf equipment and accessories as prizes for all the categories – Men’s, Women’s, Senior and Invitational, as well as the Longest Drive Contest. They even ran a timed Pitch and Putt Contest after play on the first day and gave away Srixon Z Star Golf Balls as prizes to the top seven fastest competitors. Coming out tops was Kamarulzaman Abu Samah representing Harvard Golf & Country Club with a time of 22 seconds.

Epson showcased its revolutionary 3D projector for high-resolution video content and provided individual ‘I was there, did that’ photographs of players with its state-of-the-art printers as take-home souvenirs.

Competitors and guests enjoyed a free flow of Carlsberg Beer while in the clubhouse and on course there was ample supplies of Fiona Mineral Water and Umbro isotonic drinks to fight the humid temperatures.

As the Champions headed off to have their official photos taken a Lucky Draw proved to be a bonanza for Lai Pik Chun when she collected the Grand Lucky Draw prize of a 3 Day/2 Night stay for two in Jakarta that included two rounds of golf courtesy of Liberty Travel & Tours. Srixon came to the fore in the Lucky Draw department once again, providing numerous prizes so just about everyone got to take a little something home from the tournament.

Acappella Suite Hotel was the Official Hotel and ‘home base’ for a large contingent of players who flocked in from out-of-state. It’s proximity to the golf club made the whole tournament hassle free and travel time next to nothing.
