Hi fellow golfers,

I'm Dale and I am a newbie.......just wondering whether anyone can be kind enough to explain or rather clarify to me how to play DoMi...I pretty much understand the game, just not clear on the insurance part when the game is done. Some say insurance is automatic, some say you can buy unlimited balls for insurance which made the winnings more that the game itself...

Usually under the 3 1 1 play or 30 10 10 the first 3 or 30 is for the match over 18 holes or less when one side is up by certain number of holes which is more than the remaining holes left to play.
Do mi or dormie comes in (or is it called insurance?) Comes in only if the side up by same number of holes with the remains ones (eg 3 up 3 to go or 2 up 2 to go and so on) so the dormie kicks in and the norm is 1 or 10 comes into play and the match still alive.
The last 1 or 10 is the buy and this kicks in when the match is over (I think this is the insurance bit you mentioned)

A good explanation of the Malaysian version of Sixes.

Golf and betting always go together, so I'm just wondering in other parts of the world, what kind of informal betting games are most popularly played among buddies? Non tournament formats?

In Malaysia, one of the most common is called the 15-5-5, or Game-Dormie-Buy. So if we win the game we get $15, dormie is worth $5 and buy is worth $5. Any amount can be attached to a 'ball', but usually the denominator is 3-1-1, i.e 3 'balls' for game, 1 ball for dormie and 1 for buy.

When we tee off, the 'Official Game' starts. (3 balls at stake). From here, it's matchplay format.

Dormie
'Insurance' comes into play when there is a 'dormie'. So you have 2 games running now. The original game that has 3 balls at stake, and the dormie game with 1 ball at stake. For instance Player A may be 2 up 2 to play on the official game, and even on the dormie game that just began. The last 2 holes are critical, because the dormie game is played over these 2 holes as well, on top of the official game!!

'Buy' comes into play when the match has been won or lost - e.g. player A is 2-up with only 1 hole to play, or 3 and 2. This is so we have something to play for when the game is lost, and when there's no dormie game. Of course, we usually play all 3 games if possible.

Complicated? We usually play this format on top of Sixes, and best score from the sixes. On top of that, we play fringes as well, and there are a WHOLE lot of fringes we play for (birdie, escalation, par 3 pars etc)

Thanks for the explanation guys.

Surewin88my - I am just a newbie to the forum but not exactly newbie to the golf itself.
simivan & devil_corp - need further clarification...the "buy" will kick in automatic when the game/dormie is completed or do you have a choice whether to "buy" or not? Can you also "buy" more than 1 ball?

Yes the buy kicks in only when game or match is over.
The buy by norm is 1 unit can be 5 10 or what was preagreed before tee off.
Off course losers can always request to increase the buy after having lost the game and maybe dormie if already in place but by convention this is not the norm and subject to winning side agreeing.
Sometimes game may be over but dormie still undecided, still the buy will kick in.
Be careful when you bet if with not so familiar people when they say 3 1 1 confirm clearly what is the unit - can be rm3 1 1 30 10 10 or even 300 100 100.

Play fringes with people who are the same level as you. good players can get birdie easily, sandy par easily, escalations easily, etc as compared to higher handicappers who only once a while can get birdie.

Took me a few years and quite a few hundreds maybe thousands to eventually figure out how 3 1 1 works.
If prepared to pay fees I'm always available.

Yes, never mind the technicalities. Just enjoy your game and enjoy your game. But do pay up in full when asked to by your opponent(s) who knows it.
You will probably know how the 3-1-1 system works in future once you have paid enough "tuition fee in pain" on the course. eh, hopefully..

Very Happy

agreed that, those sandy par, birdie, escalation par, etc are killing when you are playing fringes

There are some gentleman single hcappers who automatically tell you they'll limit the number of fringes to single digit in the betting Wink
